Build your Dream . . . Protect the Environment
Green design is one of the threads that run through kitchen and bath remodeling by Scholten. It is the practice of using materials that minimize or eliminate the negative impact on our environment—either through the materials’ production or use.
These products can range from renewable materials such as bamboo flooring to environmentally friendly products such as fluorescent lighting which uses less energy for longer periods of time. If doing your part to protect our environment is important to you in planning and creating your building or remodeling project, here are some questions to ask in the beginning.
Does the material conserve energy?
Does the product use safe, healthy components?
Does the material conserve natural resources?
Does the product use recycled materials?
Innovative kitchen and bath remodeling at Scholten Kitchen and Bath means keeping you informed of green products and trends. Check this section of our site often to learn of the latest in green design choices.

Winterize
Winter is the worst time for energy conservation in your home. Here are a few tips to help you conserve energy and stay warm this winter.
- Dial down. For every degree you lower your heat, you save approximately 3% on your heating bill. Use a programmable thermostat to save energy by not heating the house when you are away.
- Use weather stripping or plastic sheeting around windows and doors that may leak. Caulk any holes that allow heat to escape.
- Use gaskets to insulate outlets and switches on outside walls.
- Add extra insulation to the attic to prevent warm air from reaching your roof where it will create ice dams which restrict air flow.
- Install compact fluorescent bulbs. Shorter days means more artificial light, and these bulbs use only about 25% of the energy of regular bulbs.
- Replace furnace filters monthly to save energy through increased furnace efficiency.
- Reverse the direction of your ceiling fans so they pull air up and help to circulate warm air where you need it.
- Set the water heater at 120° and wrap it with a water heater blanket for maximum efficiency.
- Make sure fireplace flues are closed when not in use. An open flue is the same as leaving a window open.
- Insulate hot water pipes and ducts to prevent heat loss, especially on exterior walls.
